Our achievements

The Department of Social Services is one of the other nation-building institutions of the government. The Probation of Offenders Ordinance, 1960, Registration and Control Ordinance, 1961, Vagrants and Destitute Persons (Rehabilitation) Act, 2011, Children Act, 2013, Rights and Protection of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2006 to bring various programs under institutional and sustainable status and state responsibility. Has been responsible for the formulation and implementation of a significant number of laws and policies, including the Special Benefits Act for women incarcerated in prisons.


 This department is working relentlessly for the implementation of various national and international charters or conventions including the United Nations. The United Nations is playing an active role in the implementation of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the Charter of the Rights of the Child, the Charter of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities etc. Initially working with Welfare Approach, but now this department is taking new activities with Right Based and Empowerment Approach.


 The Department of Social Services is one of the other nation-building institutions of the government. Social welfare activities started in the country in 1955, but the Department of Social Services was created in 1961. The department created in the sixties has been upgraded to the Department of Social Services today.


After the partition of the country in 1947, various social problems including slum problems arose in the then provincial capital Dhaka. To solve these problems, under the advice of United Nations experts, Urban Community Development Board, Dhaka, in 1955, the city social service office and the hospital social service program were taken under the social welfare council. The Department of Social Welfare was created in 1961 by taking over the responsibility of running Vaghuré Kendra (Government Shelter), Rashtriya Atimkhana (Government Children's Home) under the Bengal Vagrants Act of 1943, Orphan and Widow Homes Act of 1944. Later, due to the extensive expansion and expansion of social service activities, it was promoted as a permanent nation-building department of the government in 1978 and recognized as the Department of Social Services in 1984.


In the monthly coordination meeting of Upazila Parishad Tarakanda, Mymensingh on 26.08.2020, the Upazila Social Services Office Tarakanda, Mymensingh as a 100% digital office for the implementation of Inthi, MIS, DIS, information transfer, Bangladesh directory and other online activities and to transform the social services office into a people-friendly office. Acknowledgments and awards are made by resolution.


In the context of social philosophy and development strategy, the Hon'ble Prime Minister of the People's Republic of Bangladesh declared January 2 as 'National Social Service Day' at the inauguration of the Samaj Seva Bhavan in 1999 to encourage the social workers engaged in this great work. The Cabinet meeting on 4 June 2012 declared 2 January as 'National Social Service Day' and listed the day as 'B' category.


Department of Social Services won the Digital Bangladesh Medal in 2019 for implementation of INTHI, MIS, DIS, Information Delivery, Bangladesh Directory and other online activities.


The Department has implemented a significant number of development projects and programs extending service to the target population and setting an unparalleled example of Public-Private Partnership (limited government assistance to private-sector projects). The Department has a vested interest in conducting advocacy activities through the celebration of various nationally and internationally recognized days and years.
